Whenever I am asked the question ‘Who is a woman in your life that has impacted you or you aspire to be like?’ With great ease my mother comes to mind. Through my years her words and her example have stayed with me, and have built the foundation of what I feel every Christian woman needs. If you would allow me, I would love to share with you some of the pearls of wisdom she has shared with me over the years.
“Know ‘whose’ you are.“
I will be your Father, and you will be my daughter, says the LORD Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18) But now the Lord who created you…says: Don’t be afraid, for I have ransomed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1) Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. (Isaiah 49:15-16)
Dear Woman of God,
“Know ‘whose’ you are.”
This was a line my mom used to tell me especially in my teen years where curiosity was at its peak. I remember being very confident in myself when I was a little girl in primary school. I knew what I liked; what I didn’t like; what I wanted to be in the future; and I thought I was the prettiest thing in the world. All of that changed when high school came along and that confidence I had in who I was and how I felt about myself deteriorated quickly. I became shy. I was unsure about what I wanted and…… I didn’t feel beautiful anymore.
I thank God for being a voice through my mom who constantly reminded me not only to remember who I was, but ‘whose’ I was. Only over time I realized that there is a difference and that the difference is powerful. To know ‘whose’ you are, means to know that you belong – and that in itself brings so much comfort.
A lot of us women roam this world forgetting that we ‘belong’…and this is not just to any mere human being – we belong to Almighty God. The sad thing is, most of us forget, and we make every effort to try find a person, a group or a culture that will accept us. We even go to great lengths to reach a certain status just to belong. The problem is that this world’s criteria for belonging changes like the weather. One day straight hair is in, the next day, its ‘rock your natural curls’. One day Hollywood says you NEED a man to be secure, the next day, an independent woman is what it’s all about. One day, you MUST be skinny, a size 2, to be beautiful, the next day it’s all about embracing the curves. I don’t know about you, but it’s overwhelming when you do try to keep up. The truth is you never will, and even more you were not made to – you already belong. You were created by God Almighty and you belong to Him. He calls you by name and says that you are His. He is Proud to say that! He even engraves you on the palm of his hands. Once you realize this truth you will stop running…you will stop trying. And this new-found confidence which comes from knowing you are God’s will spring forth from inside of you.
God sees you.
He not only sees you, but He knows you fully
….and says that You are His.
You belong. <3
